🌍 The Most Underrated Landscape Photography Destinations for a Photo Expedition

Why some of the best landscape photography locations are still hiding in plain sight

When photographers start searching for a landscape photography expedition, photo tour, or photography workshop, the same destinations appear again and again. Iceland. Dolomites. Lofoten. And yes — they are spectacular. But after leading international photo expeditions and landscape photography tours for many years, I’ve learned something important:

👉 Some of the most rewarding photography destinations are the ones nobody talks about.

Places that combine dramatic landscapes, incredible light, cultural depth and far fewer photographers. And one of the most surprising of them all? Cyprus.

📸 Landscape Photography Expeditions: What Makes a Destination Truly Great?

Before choosing a photo expedition or landscape photography workshop, it helps to understand what actually makes a destination work for photography.

A great landscape photography location usually combines several elements:

• diverse landscapes within short distances
• reliable seasonal light
• access to unique compositions
• cultural atmosphere and local character
• the possibility to return repeatedly with different conditions

Some locations are visually spectacular but photographically limited. Others — like Cyprus — are layered, diverse and surprisingly rich for landscape photography. During a single photo expedition or photography tour, you can photograph:

🏔 mountain landscapes
🌊 dramatic seascapes
🍊 Mediterranean villages
🌅 soft coastal light
🌌 night skies and astrophotography

And often within just one or two hours of driving.

🇨🇾 Cyprus: One of the Most Underrated Landscape Photography Destinations

Cyprus is rarely mentioned among serious landscape photography destinations. Which is exactly why it’s so exciting. Most photographers imagine Cyprus as a beach holiday destination. But for landscape photographers the island offers an incredibly diverse mix of subjects:

• rugged mountain ridges
• Mediterranean forests
• turquoise coastlines
• hidden villages
• vineyards and orchards
• dramatic seascapes

During our Cyprus Photo Expedition, we explore several completely different regions of the island.

⛰ The Kyrenia Mountains — dramatic Mediterranean ridges

The Kyrenia mountain range runs along the northern coastline of Cyprus and offers one of the most photogenic landscapes on the island. Sharp limestone ridges rise dramatically above the Mediterranean Sea, creating powerful layered compositions especially at sunrise and sunset. The area is still relatively unknown in landscape photography.

Which means:

✔ zero photographers
✔ untouched viewpoints
✔ opportunities to discover original compositions

For a landscape photographer, this is pure gold.

🌿 Troodos Mountains — forests, vineyards and mountain villages

The Troodos Mountains offer a completely different photographic atmosphere. Instead of coastal cliffs you find:

• pine forests
• traditional villages
• vineyards climbing mountain slopes
• winding mountain roads
• orchards full of citrus trees

In spring the valleys are filled with orange and mandarin trees, and yes — you can literally pick fresh fruit straight from the branches. In autumn and early winter the atmosphere becomes even more interesting. Small mountain villages produce traditional Cypriot wines and the region has a long wine-making tradition going back thousands of years. For photographers this means:

🍷 vineyards
🏡 authentic villages
🌄 layered mountain light
🌫 atmospheric mornings

The Troodos Mountains are perfect for slow landscape photography, exploring small locations and waiting for the right light.

🌊 Mediterranean Seascapes — dramatic light and turquoise water

The southeastern coast of Cyprus offers some of the most beautiful Mediterranean seascapes. Turquoise water, rock formations and wide horizons create perfect conditions for:

• long exposure photography
• minimalist compositions
• sunrise seascapes
• sunset light over the Mediterranean

And unlike some famous photography destinations, the coastlines here still feel quiet and natural. You often photograph entire locations completely alone. For a landscape photography expedition, this is priceless.

🍂 Why November Is One of the Best Times for a Cyprus Photo Expedition

Timing matters enormously when planning a landscape photography expedition or photo workshop. November in Cyprus sits in a rare sweet spot between seasons.

While much of Europe is already cold and grey, Cyprus still enjoys Mediterranean warmth and long golden evenings, but with far more interesting skies than during the hot summer months. Dynamic clouds, softer light and fewer tourists create ideal conditions for landscape photography.

Troodos Mountains offer clear air, comfortable temperatures and beautifully layered mountain light revealing ridges, forests and traditional villages with vineyards.

In the Kyrenia (Pentadaktylos) Mountains, occasional autumn rain often brings fresh greenery back to the hillsides, creating striking contrast with the dramatic limestone ridges rising above the Mediterranean.

Along the southeastern coast around Protaras and Ayia Napa, the sea remains warm and the season often brings textured skies and atmospheric sunsets — something rarely seen during the cloudless summer months.

🌸 Why Spring Is a Completely Different Photography Experience

If November feels like Mediterranean autumn, spring in Cyprus feels like the island waking up again. The landscape turns fresh green, valleys fill with citrus trees and the island shows three different seasonal moods at once.

In the Troodos Mountains, forests begin waking from winter and the soft mountain light creates beautiful layered compositions. Along the Kyrenia Mountains, Mediterranean spring is in full swing — wildflowers appear in the valleys and historic castles rise above the limestone ridges overlooking the sea.

The eastern coast delivers some of the island’s best seascapes, with arches, caves and turquoise water glowing under soft spring light.

🌍 Beyond Cyprus: Other Landscape Photography Expeditions

While Cyprus might be one of the most underrated photography destinations, some classic locations remain extraordinary.

Each landscape photography expedition offers a completely different visual experience.

Lofoten — Arctic light and dramatic winter landscapes

The Lofoten Islands in Norway remain one of the most powerful winter photography destinations on Earth.Sharp peaks rising from the ocean create endless compositions for landscape photographers. During winter expeditions we often photograph:

• aurora borealis
• dramatic coastal storms
• Arctic sunrise light
• frozen beaches and fjords

Lofoten is intense, dramatic and unforgettable.

🌌 Alaska — wilderness and northern lights

Alaska is one of the most extreme locations for a serious photography expedition. Vast wilderness, glaciers, mountains and powerful aurora displays create extraordinary photographic opportunities. Unlike many locations in Europe, Alaska still feels truly wild.

Every expedition there is an adventure.

🌍 Why We Design Photo Expeditions Differently

Every SmidPhotography photo expedition is built around one simple philosophy:

Small groups. Maximum photography time.

Most trips include:

maximum 6 photographers
multiple instructors
• flexible shooting schedules
• deep location knowledge

This allows every participant to receive individual guidance in the field. Instead of rushing through locations, we focus on:

• composition
• light
• technical decisions
• creative development

Because great landscape photography is never just about being somewhere beautiful. It’s about understanding the landscape.

This diversity makes Cyprus one of the most underrated landscape photography destinations in Europe.

  • During our Cyprus photo expeditions, we explore several very different regions of the island, including:

    • the dramatic Kyrenia (Pentadaktylos) Mountains
    • the forested landscapes of the Troodos Mountains
    • Mediterranean seascapes, arches and sea caves
    • hidden coastal viewpoints and traditional villages
