The Most Technically Focused Lofoten Midnight Sun Photography Workshop

Join Jan Smid, Master QEP and ZEISS Ambassador, for nine days on Norway's legendary Lofoten Islands during the most extraordinary photographic phenomenon in Europe — the Midnight Sun. The sun never sets. The golden hour lasts for half a day. The granite peaks, turquoise fjords, and white Arctic beaches are yours without the time pressure that defines every other landscape destination.

This is not a photo tour where you follow a guide from viewpoint to viewpoint. This is an intensive Lofoten landscape photography workshop built around real decisions, real light, and real results — with three instructors, multiple vehicles, and a programme that adapts every hour to Arctic conditions.

Jan has led 24 sold-out Lofoten expeditions since 2016 — across every season, every light condition, and every hour of the Arctic day. No one knows this island's photographic potential better. These are the locations, the timing, and the knowledge that only come from a decade of dedicated field work.

All images on this page were captured during previous Smid Photography expeditions to Lofoten. They are the standard we work to.

No Fixed Itinerary — That Is Our Greatest Advantage

We don’t follow a rigid tour itinerary—and that is our greatest tactical advantage. To capture world-class imagery, our Lofoten photo workshop operates on a fluid, condition-driven schedule. We adapt every hour to the Arctic cloud movements, wind, and the position of the Midnight Sun to ensure you are standing in the most dramatic location at the absolute peak of its potential.

Our Lofoten photo expedition covers the raw spectrum of the Arctic:

  • Towering Granite Peaks: Dominating the skyline from high-altitude viewpoints.

  • Wild Arctic Beaches: Exploiting the contrast between white sand, turquoise water, and jagged cliffs.

  • Hidden Coastal Gems: Using my 12+ years of scouting to access off-the-beaten-path locations that 99% of landscape photography tours miss.

No crowds. No rushed sightseeing. Just clean, high-impact landscapes and the technical space to master your craft. Between key sessions, we combine guided technical mastery with documentary-style shooting, ensuring your portfolio tells the complete story of the Arctic summer. This is the ultimate photo tour for those who want to exploit Lofoten’s full photographic potential.

📍Highlights you may experience during the expedition include:

  • 🏘️ Reine & Hamnøy – postcard-perfect red cabins and dramatic fjord landscapes

  • 🏡 Sakrisøy – picturesque yellow rorbuer nestled under towering peaks

Here’s a map of some locations – the list is far from complete, and the pins are only approximate:

Jan’s experience really showed — we were always at the right place at the right time. Plans were constantly adapted to weather and conditions. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, more like traveling with like-minded photographers than being on a typical workshop. Highly recommended — I’d definitely join another tour with Jan.
— Frank V., Germany · Lofoten March 2026
The week spent in Lofoten absolutely exceeded my expectations. Jan loves to share his knowledge and is a natural teacher. Each participant benefitted from individual attention and suggestions for improved composition. He taught me to see images differently so I could self-critique and improve my landscapes independently.
— Pat Antliff, Canada · Lofoten March 2025
Jan worked relentlessly to ensure we never missed an opportunity — staying up during nights to check for Aurora, constantly adapting the schedule to changing conditions. He made sure we were always at the right place at the right time, all with a very collegial attitude. I can’t recommend his photo workshops enough.

The Midnight Sun Advantage: What No Other Season Offers

Forget everything you know about "golden hour." In June, this Lofoten photo expedition offers a creative rhythm unlike any other time of year. Imagine having 6 hours of peak light to perfect one single, high-impact composition. That is not an exaggeration—it is our daily reality on this exclusive landscape photography workshop.

We exploit a landscape that most "winter-only" photographers never see:

  • The Midnight Transition: Sunsets that bleed directly into sunrises without ever going dark.

  • Vibrant Arctic Textures: Lush coastal colors and blooming wildflowers during our specialized photo tour sessions.

  • Atmospheric Drama: Misty inversions and glowing skies that cast soft shadows for half a day.

This is the ultimate field for precision. From high-altitude ridges to hidden scouting spots, we use the endless daylight for long, focused sessions. No rushing—just pure, high-intensity photography on the best Lofoten photo tour for those seeking a landscape that feels like another planet.

Fluid Planning — The Arctic Demands It

In the Arctic, a fixed schedule is the enemy of a world-class portfolio. With the Midnight Sun, time is irrelevant — we move when the light is strongest, whether that's at 2 A.M. on a jagged peak or during a soft transition at sea level. Every day is planned in real-time based on light direction, cloud movement, and wind.
