A remote photographic expedition led by Jan Smid, Master QEP

Nowhere blends raw coastal beauty and minimalist elegance like the Outer Hebrides. From the glowing sands of Luskentyre and Seilebost to the ancient Callanish Standing Stones and the wild cliffs of Lewis, every scene is sculpted by wind, tide and shifting light.

We’ve spent weeks scouting across Lewis and Harris, testing access, light direction and tide patterns — so you can focus entirely on creativity. Every day brings a balance between iconic and hidden: the beaches everyone dreams of and the elevated viewpoints almost nobody photographs.

Why Late August?

Because it’s magic.
By late summer, the heather is in full bloom, the air is warm but clear, and the sun drops low enough to paint the land with endless golden hours. Atlantic weather adds fast-changing drama — clouds, glow, mist, rainbows — all in one evening.

What You'll Photograph

Each day we follow the light — not the schedule. Our adaptive plan responds to forecasts, tide and wind, ensuring we are always shooting in the best possible conditions.

Highlights:

  • Callanish Standing Stones — sunrise and blue-hour silhouettes against dramatic skies

  • Luskentyre and Seilebost Beaches — turquoise shallows and reflective white sands

  • Butt of Lewis — crashing Atlantic waves and raw clifftop drama

  • Scarista and Northton — glowing dunes and abstract shorelines at golden hour

  • Hilltops above Harris — sweeping panoramas with Harris Sound at dusk

  • Lochs and Heather Ridges — calm reflections and late-summer color

  • Hidden viewpoints — locations we reveal only to expedition participants

Outside golden hours we explore textures, villages and coastal details — creative mid-day shooting that most photographers ignore and that builds a complete, cohesive portfolio.

I have participated in 4 different photography expeditions organized and led by Jan and two of his colleagues. I found Jan’s expeditions to be the best and most complete photography training with hands-on-like setting up a camera and tripod for panorama photography in the various locations and for different light conditions. The attendance is kept small, and with three instructors always present, one gets a lot of individual training. The shoot locations are carefully selected. I recommend these workshops for everyone interested in landscape photography.

Why Join with Jan Smid

Knowing the Outer Hebrides is not enough. You need someone who reads light, weather and tide in real time — and puts you in the right place before the shot happens. That is what separates a productive expedition from a beautiful holiday.

Jan Smid holds the Master QEP qualification — one of the highest technical and creative certifications in professional landscape photography — and has led multiple international expeditions across Arctic Norway, Alaska, Madeira and the Atlantic coast. He has received over 300 international photography awards and serves as a ZEISS Ambassador.

On every expedition, Jan adapts the plan constantly. If the light changes, we move. If the weather shifts, we reposition. His approach is not about visiting locations — it is about capturing them at their absolute peak. With a maximum of 6 participants and 3 instructors, every photographer receives genuine personal attention. Not a group lecture. Real mentoring, in the field, every day.

Bullet summary:

  • Led by Jan Smid, Master QEP — one of Europe's most awarded landscape photographers

  • Built from real on-site scouting across Lewis and Harris

  • Timed for late-summer perfection — blooming heather, long golden light, atmospheric Atlantic skies

  • Both iconic beaches and elevated viewpoints few photographers ever reach

  • Small group, maximum flexibility, personal mentoring and creative focus

The week spent in Lofoten absolutely exceeded my expectations. Jan loves to share his knowledge and is a natural teacher. Each participant benefitted from individual attention and suggestions for improved composition. He taught me to see images differently so I could self-critique and improve my landscapes independently.

Jan worked relentlessly to ensure we never missed an opportunity — staying up during nights to check for Aurora, constantly adapting the schedule to changing conditions. He made sure we were always at the right place at the right time, all with a very collegial attitude. I can’t recommend his photo workshops enough.
— Lukas Ramming, Switzerland · February 2025
Jan’s experience really showed — we were always at the right place at the right time. Plans were constantly adapted to weather and conditions. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, more like traveling with like-minded photographers than being on a workshop. Highly recommended — I’d definitely join another tour with Jan.

  • Late August brings a beautiful mix of soft golden light, long evenings, blooming heather and moody Atlantic conditions; you can experience sun, haze, dramatic clouds and light rain in the same hour — a gift for landscape photography because it produces depth, atmosphere and color transitions you simply don’t get in stable-weather destinations.

  • The expedition is built to be accessible for all fitness levels: most locations involve short, easy walks, while optional hilltop viewpoints are available for those who want more adventure; with multiple vehicles and instructors, nobody is pushed, nobody waits, and the pace always matches your comfort.

  • No problem — you can shoot full-frame, APS-C or even mobile, and we’ll help you get excellent results by teaching practical techniques for stability, long exposures, panoramas and clean RAW capture; after booking, you’ll receive a detailed gear guide plus optional pre-trip consultation to fine-tune whatever equipment you already own.

  • Absolutely — you’ll photograph famous places like Luskentyre, Seilebost, Callanish and the Butt of Lewis, but thanks to our extensive scouting we also take you to lesser-known coves, elevated viewpoints and remote ridges rarely photographed by visitors, giving you a truly unique portfolio beyond the standard Hebrides shots.

  • If you’d like to continue developing your landscape portfolio after the Outer Hebrides, the most meaningful next step is the Alaska Fall Landscape & Glacier Photo Expeditions 2026 & 2027 — combining vast tundra colors, huge glaciers and the opportunity to photograph the Northern Lights.
