Sunrise Over the Kyrenia Range

Sunrise in the Kyrenia Mountains in Northern Cyprus photographed during Jan Smid’s Cyprus Photo Expedition in February 2026. Soft morning light illuminates the rugged Mediterranean mountain landscape as the sun rises above the horizon.

This photograph was taken in the Kyrenia Mountains of Northern Cyprus during the early morning of our Cyprus Photo Expedition in February 2026. As the sun slowly rose above the horizon, the soft golden light began to reveal the layered ridges of the Pentadaktylos range and the vast Mediterranean landscape stretching beyond the mountains.

I discovered this viewpoint during one of my earlier scouting trips across the island and immediately knew it would be a perfect location for sunrise photography. Watching the first light move across the rugged terrain and illuminate the distant hills is a quiet but powerful experience, especially in the calm conditions of the early morning.

This image is part of the work created during our first group Cyprus Photo Expedition, which followed three private scouting expeditions dedicated to discovering new photo locations, testing compositions, and preparing the route for photographers across both Northern and Southern Cyprus. After the success of the February expedition, the next Cyprus Photo Expeditions are planned for November 2026 and March 2027, continuing to explore the Kyrenia Mountains, the Troodos Mountains, and the island’s dramatic Mediterranean coastline.

Panorama compiled from total of 140 frames (5-level exposure bracketing of 20 frames in three rows, 40 antireflective frames).
