Gateway to the Sunrise

Sunrise at the natural rock bridge at Cape Greco in Cyprus photographed during Jan Smid’s Cyprus Photo Expedition in February 2026. The rising sun illuminates the Mediterranean Sea through the famous sea arch on the southeastern coast of the island.

This photograph was taken at the natural rock bridge at Cape Greco on the southeastern coast of Cyprus, during our Cyprus Photo Expedition in February 2026. The location is one of the most iconic coastal formations on the island, where a natural limestone arch spans above the Mediterranean and creates a perfect frame for sunrise over the sea.

Photographing this place at first light creates a very special atmosphere. As the sun rises above the horizon, the warm morning light begins to illuminate the sea below and slowly touches the rugged limestone textures of the rock bridge. Standing here at dawn, watching the Mediterranean landscape come alive with the first golden light of the day, is a powerful experience for any landscape photographer.

This image was created during our first group Cyprus landscape photography expedition, which followed three earlier private scouting expeditions dedicated to discovering new photo locations, refining compositions, and carefully checking accommodations and logistics across both Northern and Southern Cyprus. Thanks to that preparation, the February expedition proved to be very successful and produced a large collection of strong images from across the island.

Following the success of this first expedition, the next Cyprus Photo Expeditions are planned for November 2026 and March 2027, continuing to explore the dramatic coastlines of the island, the Kyrenia Mountains in Northern Cyprus, and the rugged landscapes of the Troodos Mountains during the best light of the year.

Panorama compiled from total of 80 frames (5-level exposure bracketing of 10 frames in two rows, 30 antireflective frames).
