Why Photograph Lofoten in Autumn – On Expedition with Jan Šmíd 🍁✨

The Lofoten Islands are often called the hidden gem of Scandinavia — and for good reason. Towering fjords, rugged coastlines, and dramatic peaks create a dreamlike backdrop for every frame.

But what makes September in Lofoten truly magical?

🌌 Northern Lights Season Begins
Autumn starts earlier here — and with it, the sky comes alive. Thanks to Lofoten’s location far above the Arctic Circle (even further north than Iceland!), Aurora Borealis photography is not just possible — it’s likely.

🍂 Spectacular Autumn Colors
The tundra transforms into a palette of golds, reds, and oranges, making it the perfect season for landscape photography.

🌦️ Photogenic in Any Weather
Lofoten’s coastline ensures dramatic skies and moody light even when conditions shift. You’ll leave with incredible photos — come rain or shine.

🌡️ Surprisingly Mild Climate
Thanks to the Gulf Stream, autumn temperatures in Lofoten are milder than in most parts of Europe or North America — even during aurora season.

On our photo expeditions, you’ll master the art of strong visual storytelling. This video highlights frequent landscape photography mistakes — from awkward horizons to cluttered frames — and shows how we teach you to avoid them in the field. With expert guidance from Jan Šmíd (Master QEP), you’ll refine your eye for composition and elevate every shot.

📷 What Will We Photograph in Lofoten?

During this unique photo expedition to Lofoten in autumn, we’ll focus on capturing the dramatic contrast of golden foliage and rugged mountains, reflections in calm fjords, and the mysterious northern lights dancing across arctic skies.

Expect epic scenes of:

  • 🏞️ Jagged peaks mirrored in still waters at iconic locations like Reine and Hamnøy

  • 🌅 Sunrises and sunsets bathing the archipelago in soft Arctic light

  • 🌌 Aurora Borealis photography, with expert guidance on exposure and composition

  • 🌊 Coastal long exposures with crashing waves, leading lines, and moody skies

  • 🛶 Red cabins (rorbuer), scenic harbors, fjords, beaches, and more

This photo tour is designed for landscape photographers, from enthusiasts to professionals, who want to return with a portfolio full of stunning, well-composed, and technically perfect images.

Whether you're aiming to master wide-angle landscapes, experiment with ND filters, or finally capture your dream northern lights photo, you’ll find the perfect conditions on this guided Lofoten photography workshop with Jan Šmíd (Master QEP).

How We Work: Flexible, Real-World Shooting (what about the itinerary)?

We often get asked:

“Where will we be shooting on Day 3?”
“What time is breakfast on Day 7?”
“Will we see spot X at sunset?”

Here’s our honest answer:
We don’t offer cookie-cutter travel itineraries — we run real photo expeditions.

Rather than following a fixed day-by-day plan, we design each shooting day based on the latest weather forecasts, light conditions, and local insight. This allows us to respond flexibly and make the most of every opportunity — sunrise, sunset, mist, clouds etc. Thanks to our experience and deep knowledge of Lofoten’s terrain, we always choose the best location for each moment. Our primary focus is, of course, capturing top-quality landscape and Aurora photos. However, in between the key photo sessions, we also explore the stunning sights of the Lofoten Islands. We visit iconic and lesser-known locations mentioned in the expedition introduction, combining guided sightseeing with documentary-style photography — all to give participants a truly unforgettable travel experience.

🎯 Our mission is simple:
To help every participant create the best images possible — every single day.

Btw, don’t miss our popular Autumn and Winter Lofoten photo expeditions for 2025/26 – experience vibrant red blueberry carpets, golden mountain light, frozen fjords, the magical Northern Lights and snow-covered landscapes in the winter.

  • Not at all. This photo expedition is open to all skill levels — from enthusiastic beginners to experienced photographers. Jan Šmíd (Master QEP) and his team provide individual guidance tailored to your needs, so you’ll always be learning at your own pace.

  • Yes! One of the main highlights of the expedition is chasing and photographing the Aurora Borealis. If the skies are clear and the solar activity aligns, you'll be guided on how to capture stunning aurora images, both technically and creatively.

  • Autumn in Lofoten brings rapidly changing conditions — from dramatic skies and golden sunlight to moody clouds and occasional rain. This dynamic weather creates the perfect setting for capturing breathtaking landscapes and Northern Lights.

  • A DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual settings, a sturdy tripod, wide-angle and telephoto lenses, ND filters, and weatherproof clothing are essential. After registration, you'll receive a detailed gear checklist to ensure you’re fully prepared.
