Secret Ridge Sunset over Pico Ruivo

Exclusive panoramic sunset view from a secret scouting location near Pico Ruivo, Madeira, with no crowds, during Jan Smid’s photo expedition.

The true soul of Pico Ruivo is revealed during the final hours of the day. This panoramic photo was captured from an exclusive, undisclosed location that I identified during our scouting missions. By stepping away from the main summit platforms where most visitors linger, our group found absolute solitude to witness the most dramatic sunset in the Atlantic.

As the sun descends, the low-angled light rakes across the jagged basalt towers, emphasizing the incredible verticality and raw texture of Madeira's highest massif. During our May 2025 expedition, we were completely alone on this ridge, watching the "sea of clouds" ignite in a spectrum of fire and gold—a rare moment of peace and perfect light that defines the Jan Smid Photography experience.

This level of exclusivity and technical dominance is the foundation of our upcoming Madeira Photography Expedition in May 2026. We don't just visit locations; we exploit the best light conditions at spots that remain hidden from the crowds. Join our elite group of 6 for a masterclass in high-end panoramic workflows and light prediction.

Panorama compiled from total of 160 frames (5-level exposure bracketing of 28 frames in two rows, 20 antireflective frames).
