Above the Silent Sea of Clouds

Spectacular sunrise above the inversion clouds at Bica da Cana, Madeira, overlooking Pico do Arieiro during Jan Smid's May photo expedition.

This photograph was captured at Bica da Cana, one of the most iconic viewpoints on the Paul da Serra plateau, during our annual Madeira Photo Expedition in May 2025. As the first light of the sun crested the horizon, it illuminated a perfect sea of clouds, isolating the jagged peaks of the central massif in a display of pure atmospheric drama.

Bica da Cana is a staple of our itinerary because it perfectly demonstrates the importance of elevation and weather prediction. Finding the balance where the clouds are high enough to fill the valley but low enough to reveal the summits of Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo is the result of years of scouting and "on-the-ground" experience.

It was about executing a complex workflow to preserve the incredible dynamic range of the rising sun against the soft textures of the clouds. If you want to move beyond simple snapshots and master high-end single shots and panoramic workflows in these conditions, join us for our next Madeira Photo Expedition in May 2026. With a 1:3 instructor-to-participant ratio, we ensure you dominate the light, not just witness it.

Panorama compiled from total of 175 frames (5-level exposure bracketing of 31 frames in three rows, 20 antireflective frames).
