From the Highest Crests

Extra-wide panoramic landscape photograph "From the Highest Crests" featuring the jagged volcanic ridges of Pico do Arieiro, Madeira, at sunrise. Captured from a unique, hidden vantage point by Jan Smid, Master QEP, in 2024.

Another wide panorama from a very successful photo workshop in Madeira in May 2024. Finding a new composition at Pico do Arieiro isn’t easy. In recent years, crowds of curious onlookers flock there every morning to catch the sunrise from "that famous Instagram spot." So, we photographers are left to search for new, less accessible spots where there’s a chance we’ll be alone. To be honest, this location is really difficult to access, and when I was balancing on the edge up there, I didn’t feel very comfortable. I was relieved that all the participants of the 2024 spring photo expedition to Madeira stayed a bit lower, in safer photo spots. So, will I return to this location with a photo tour to Madeira in the spring of 2025? Honestly, I’m not entirely sure :)
