The Ent of Fanal Forest

A gnarled, ancient Til tree (Ocotea foetens) reminiscent of an Ent from Lord of the Rings, shrouded in thick mist in the Fanal Laurissilva forest of Madeira, captured during a Jan Smid photo expedition.

This hauntingly beautiful, gnarled Til tree (Ocotea foetens) is the most iconic resident of the Fanal Laurissilva forest in Madeira. Its powerful, anthropomorphic posture immediately earned it the nickname "The Ent of Fanal," looking as if it might step through the Atlantic mists at any moment. Capturing this precise atmosphere was a highlight of our Madeira Photo Expedition in May 2025.

Fanal is not about clear skies; it’s about exploiting the specific weather conditions that create the thick, rolling fog this UNESCO World Heritage site is famous for. While many visitors struggle with the flat light, our Madeira Photo Workshop focuses on the technical dominance needed to turn these conditions into master-level portfolio pieces. We teach you how to see the landscape beyond the obvious, utilizing the mist as a compositional tool to isolate these ancient structures.

This legendary forest is a cornerstone of our upcoming Madeira Photography Expedition in May 2026. Whether you are looking for a general guide to Madeira or want to master the advanced field techniques used to capture this image, our expedition provides the elite coaching (1:3 ratio) you need. We ensure you are always in the right spot at the right time, whether you're exploring deep in the forest or shooting from our curated spots near the vehicles.
