Between Sea and Silence – Skagsanden Beach, Lofoten

Winter seascape panorama from Skagsanden Beach, Lofoten Islands — captured during the February 2025 photo expedition led by Jan Šmíd, Master QEP. Dramatic Arctic coastline, turquoise water, and snow-covered peaks under soft northern light.

This panoramic image from Skagsanden Beach was captured during our February 2025 Lofoten photo expedition, at a moment of complete low tide. The scene was calm and peaceful — until, without warning, a massive four-meter wave rose from the ocean and struck with full force, knocking me into the icy water between the rocks.
The sea dragged me under, spinning me like a crocodile with its prey. I managed to surface for a brief moment — just long enough to see the terrified look of one of our participants on the shore — still holding the tripod with the camera in one hand and my photo backpack on my shoulders, both now completely underwater.
Then the second wave came. Even stronger, it rolled over me again, pulling everything back into the chaos. And just as suddenly as it all began, the sea fell silent. Absolute calm returned, as if nothing had happened. I was soaked but alive — and incredibly, so was all my gear. The ocean had taken nothing, only left a lasting reminder of its wild power.

Panorama compiled from total of 120 frames (3-level exposure bracketing of 40 frames in three rows).
