The Cauldron of Námafjall

Boiling mud pot at Námafjall geothermal field, Iceland, at sunrise — panoramic fine art photograph by Jan Smid, Master QEP

Captured at the Námafjall (Hverir) geothermal field during our October 2025 Iceland photo expedition, this panorama documents the raw interior of the Earth breaking through the surface. The pre-dawn light caught the mud pot mid-boil — a fleeting geometry of sulphur, steam, and ancient rock that no two frames ever repeat. We worked multiple bracketed sequences to preserve the full dynamic range from the deep shadow of the crater walls to the burning lenticular clouds above.

Iceland is one of the most technically demanding and visually unforgiving landscapes on the planet — and one of the most rewarding. If you want to learn to read this kind of light and master single shots & high-end panoramic workflows in extreme terrain, join one of our landscape photography expeditions or take your skills further with an online masterclass. Iceland is also available as a private photo expedition — entirely tailored to your schedule and goals.

Panoramic photography (incl. exposure bracketing).
